Simply the Best: A Case for Abduction

چکیده
This paper formulates what I think is the basic problem of any attempt to characterise the abstract structure of scientific method, viz., that it has to satisfy two conflicting desiderata: it should be ampliative (contentincreasing) and it should confer epistemic warrant on its outcomes. Then, after two extreme solutions to the problem of the method, viz., Enumerative Induction and the Method of Hypothesis, are examined, the paper argues that abduction, suitably understood as Inference to the Best Explanation, offers the best description of scientific method and solves the foregoing problem in the best way: it strikes the best balance between ampliation and epistemic warrant.

Iterated Abduction
Abduction is a pattern of inference in which an agent seeks an explanation for an observation or report. Iterated abduction is a variety of abduction in which evidence is acquired and explained over time. The longterm goal is to maintain highly plausible consistent explanations for as much of the evidence as possible. Some reports, at the time of acquisition, may be inconsistent with the agent’...
متن کاملA Linear Constraint Satisfaction Approach to Cost-Based Abduction
Santos Jr, E., A linear constraint satisfaction approach to cost-based abduction, Artificial Intelligence 65 (1994) 1-27. Abduction is the problem of finding the best explanation for a given set of observations. Within AI, this has been modeled as proving the observation by assuming some set of hypotheses. Cost-based abduction associates a cost with each hypothesis. The best proof is the one wh...
متن کاملAbductive Inference in Bayesian Networks: A Review
The goal of this paper is to serve as a survey for the problem of abductive inference (or belief revision) in Bayesian networks. Thus, the problem is introduced in its two variants: total abduction (or MPE) and partial abduction (or MAP). Also, the problem is formulated in its general case, that is, looking for the K best explanations. Then, a (non exhaustive) review of exact and approximate al...
متن کاملConjunctive Versus Disjunctive Abduction —A Pragmatic Difference Between Abduction and Inverse Resolution
The philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce (see [1] for further details) distinguished three types of logical inference: deduction, induction and abduction. Deduction is a form of explicative inference; the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises. Induction and abduction, however, are forms of ampliative inference, the results of which do not follow necessarily from the premises. Harman [2...
متن کاملBuckling Analysis of Simply-supported Functionally Graded Rectangular Plates under Non-uniform In-plane Compressive Loading
In this research, mechanical buckling of rectangular plates of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is considered. Equilibrium and stability equations of a FGM rectangular plate under uniform in-plane compression are derived. For isotropic materials, convergent buckling loads have been presented for non-uniformly compressed rectangular plates based on a rigorous superposition fourier solution f...
